Mistracking—when a conveyor belt slips off its intended path and pulls toward one side—is one of the most common operating issues in material handling. Left unaddressed, it shreds belt edges, ruins components, and halts production lines. Here is a practical checklist to diagnose and resolve tracking errors.

Top Causes of Conveyor Mistracking

  1. Structural Misalignment: The conveyor frame must be perfectly straight, square, and level. If the frame itself is warped or unlevel, the belt will naturally drift to the lowest side.
  2. Debris Accumulation: Dirt, grease, and material carryback can stick to pulleys and idlers. This build-up alters the effective diameter of the roller, steering the belt off-course.
  3. Uneven Product Loading: If products are dropped off-center onto the belt, the uneven distribution of weight forces the belt out of alignment.

Steps to Fix and Train the Belt

  • Thoroughly clean all rollers, pulleys, and the underside of the belt.
  • Use a laser tool or leveling line to ensure the structure and all pulleys are square.
  • Adjust the idlers incrementally to ‘train’ the belt back into the center path.
  • Install tracking trainers or self-aligning idlers that automatically respond to belt drift.
